Ralf has a couple of high speed caches working now, and we would like to see how well it works. All the shows have the option to download using freecache. It should never be slower than downloading any other way, and often it will be faster (we are getting about 65% cache hit rate).

Also, please respond with how you like the speed and the bundled concert (in a .tar file).

thank you! (see www.freecache.org for cool stats pages)

If you use Windows, typical packages like WinZip or NetZip will handle .tar as well as .zip.

WOW!! Freecache is AWESOME. I can download the shows that are cached at 900 mb/sec!

The only downside is that for the shows that are not yet cached, I usually get no faster than 20-30 mb/sec. That's a problem with the tar-bundled shows because at 20-30 mb/sec the entire show takes HOURS to download and I can't seem to resume the download after I've begun. Nonetheless, when I know I'll be online for several hours, I'll be sure to use the Freecache system because I understand that doing so will somehow transfer the file to the cache? Is that right?

the idea of resuming has come up several times. we will have to address this issue of range requests. this will allow a bunch of different serving options.

thank you for the positive words! go ralf.

Getting about 14.5KB/sec download right now on the Lotus2002-11-01 24bit flac show.

Do a bunch of people have to download at once in order for speeds to be better (like bittorrent) or does it matter?

that show is now queued to go onto the archive's and stanford's freecaches. Therefore, you are seeing normal speeds, but once the cache is filled, then future users will get it at much faster speeds.

I figured this out by going to the second level status page (www.freecache.org, clicked on status, then clicked on one of the freecache hostnames):

http://www.archive.org/web/freecache/status2.php#sls-310-LNX.Stanford.EDU

we are getting a 45% cache hitrate, which should improve once the caches fill up and our policies get tweeked.
